Background
Turkana District of Kenya covers approximately 77,000 square kilometers lying almost entirely within the Gregory of the Great Rift Valley.
It is bordered by Ethiopia in the North East, by Sudan in the North and by Uganda in the West.
The Turkana District is hot and dry, and subject to periods of severe draught. Rainfall is unreliable, and unpredictable in amount, duration and periodicity.
There are no permanent rivers in the district, and only two rivers, the Kerio and the Turkwel, carry any surface flow for more than a few months each year. Most smaller drainages carry water only for a few days during the year when they are subject to flash floods during the rainy season.
Climatic conditions described here fit clearly within the framework of arid land ecosystems as non equilibrium ecosystems. The aridity, frequency of drought and extreme coefficients of variance in the rainfall pattern lead to unstable and unpredictable system dynamics.
In severe frequent droughts population fluctuations prevent plants and herbivores from developing closely coupled interactions, ecosystem development and succession are limited or non existent and ecosystems hardly reach a climatically determined equilibrium point.

I am from the U.S.A. and have had the good fortune to spend time in Grenada--gem-like, geographically very small, English-speaking, in the Eastern Caribbean . I believe there is no Grenadian representation at Terra Madre 2006. I’m sure this can change by 2008! Please contact Dessima Williams () the director of GrenED (Grenada Education and Development Organization (http://www.grened.org) or myself (Rita Hindin, ) about making connection with Grenada, especially about the possibility of promoting production of Grenadian cacao, some of the best cacao in the world I am told.

(adapted from a November 27th Terra Madre 2006 presentation on “the power of co-producers)
We took a long time getting ourselves into this food mess, and it’s going to take a long time getting out. Transformational change just ain’t gonna happen, no matter how many Terra Madres we put on, so it’s up to incremental change—long, slow, hard slogging—to make things right. Don’t get me wrong, though, without Terra Madre, and the other banner-raising, relationship-making, soul-inspiring events like it, the incremental change wouldn’t have a rallying cry to keep it going forward.
So what does this have to do with farmers’ markets and wikis? Oh, everything, I’d say.
