The joint-community website initiative from Kenya officially went live on the first day of Terra Madre 2006. The new, blog-based site: http://www.sustainablekenya.info is designed to allow communities across Kenya to network and exchange information without having to invest in expensive software or hardware. It is very much in the spirit of Terra Madre.

Sustainable poultry production involves alternative production methods that are environmentally friendly and address consumer concerns. Consumers are interested in poultry products such as high welfare, free-range, organic, high omega, and others. Native and heritage breeds are more adapted to free-range production than conventional fast-growing breeds and using them in organic production systems is a way to preserve them. Production systems that integrated poultry with other livestock and vegetable production are especially important in developing countries. I believe we need sessions at Slow Food Nation (USA) and Terra Madre specific to poultry to assist researchers, producers, chefs and others in networking. The nonprofit organization, the National Center for Appropriate Technology, has programs in sustainable agriculture (http://www.attra.ncat.org) and maintains a website on poultry (http://www.sustainablepoultry.ncat.org). Please send me any ideas for the poultry website, photos, and networking for the future. Thanks, Anne Fanatico 479-442-9824

African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) has collaborated with AMREF Italy, Cariplo, Regionne Lombardia and Terra Nuova and have constructed a meat processing Factory in Northern, Turkana in Kenya at a place called Lomidat in Lokichoggio. Lomidat means something very difficult to get but once got it is so sweet that you do not want to let go.
Goat meat from Lomidat is the sweetest in the world.
The Factory once functional will give the local communities an out let for thier livestock. It is hoped that the communities will be encouraged to sell some of thier animals thus reducing the effect on the vegetation.
Cattle rustling will also reduce or be eliminated entirely.
To ensure that we sell our products far and wide and to maximize on production we are appealing for funding either in cash to aquire a refigerated truck 7 or 10 toner, processing equipment to include sausage making , slicers , mincing , curring and caning equipoment. Others including cutting knives, metal vest, etc. You could also donate used equipment
This paper was reaqd at Terra Madre and and is avaible on request and will be emailed to you.

Slow Food Nation seems like a logical progression from Terra Madre / Salone de Gusto. What this will embody, upon its inception in 2008, is the chance for American produers to have a national forum to display their wares and the superiority of locally grown and produced food products. My own feeling is this is a a win / win arrangement for the producers and the slow food movement to encourage good, clean, and fair food for the citizens of the US.
California is an ideal place to launch SFN, but the perception that this is some kind of left coast or California only movement has got to be avoided. Otherwise, getting adequate participation from producers who may never have heard of Slow Food, might be tough. Start in California but move out from there. Go to a different region every year and advertise nationally. This is all the more likely to be successful if regional environmental and cultural preservation groups can be encouraged to contribute manpower and organizational networking resources. I don’t see how this can miss!!!
Cheers!

The future of Slow Food in North America is incredibly exciting with new projects, especially Slow Food Nation, RAFT, and the highlighting of Ark and Presidi products at the forefront. The next 2 years promise much progress and growth hopefully allowing the United States with Itlay to lead the world of Slow Food forward, spreading the word about the importance of sustainable, regional, ecological agriculture.
